About Bruce
“Using No Way as Way, Having No Limitation as Limitation”, said by Bruce Lee (李小龍). 語言的教學與功夫的操練有著類似的邏輯,這也是給自己取名Bruce的原因。閱讀時代雜誌的年限已不可考,從高中時代開始即大量獵取世界新聞,尤其以國際外交、中美關係居多,在2004年,取得全民英檢高級證書。除了任教於語言中心外,也兼職在陽明醫學院、中華電信及在各大銀行擔任講師,課程內容仍以Bruce最擅長的新聞英文及單字解析為主。
I had not been a good student. Never did well in school. Though I hate studying, I love to read and know things. Studying and reading are two different things. The word “studying” calls to mind “stuffing,” you stuff knowledge into you brain and you stay in the same place. Think “study hard” or “study hall “ or study room.” In study cramming is the force. While in reading you think of knowing, hunting, and catching, in other words, the mind is traveling rather than being stuffed. In reading curiosity is the force.
So this is how I learn English – I never torture myself with rote memorization (except when I was in school) on words or grammar, rather I search, I feel, I know. To quote the Greek philosopher Plutarch (蒲魯塔克 c. 46 – 120 AD), “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” The simple philosophical statement is useful in education, and of course in language learning.
The brain is thus the hunter, hungering for knowledge, rather than a receptacle to be crammed. English to me is not a kind of knowledge; it is a vehicle to knowledge. I am a curious person, enjoying reading world news: international politics, economics, American culture, the rise of China, art, and entertainment
When I teach students, I do not tell them to memorize certain knowledge; instead, I create a space in front of them, allowing their sense of stretch and extend; I like to see how far their perception can go using English, regardless of their English proficiency. When they grasp the situation, the English words and grammar start to make sense at the same time.
In other words, I use world knowledge, rather than textbooks, to teach English.
