l Like his online predecessor Susan Boyle, Lin’s success was unlikely, especially in Taiwan, the factory for most of the lithe stars in the Mandopop world. ‘Predecessor’ 是前任者或是前輩的意思，意義的線索來來自於字首: ‘pre-‘，前面、之前的意思。’lithe’ 是輕柔的意思，’lithe stars’ 指的是「苗條的歌星」（對比小胖和Susan Boyle的體重）。’Mandopop’ 是 ‘Mandarin Popular Music’ 的濃縮。

l I didn’t place in any contest. ‘Place’ 是一個簡單的單字，當名詞是 ‘地方’ 的意思，當動詞是 ‘設置、處於某狀況’ 的意思，在個個句子的意思是 (從上下文判斷) ‘我以前在任何比賽都沒有列名’。
