測字：你的單字感覺力？
在本周的時代閱讀課中，Bruce老師挑選了一篇有點深度，在語法結構及單字使用上都有點複雜的文章- How China Is like 19th Century America. 但身處台灣的我們對海峽對岸的發展並不陌生，因此透過同學們平日的觀察或媒體的報導，多多少少可以掌握文章內容。

‘unprecedented’ 是一個報紙上常出現的字，因為天天都有 ‘前所未有，史無前例’ 的事情發生。‘precedent’ 是 ‘前例’ 的意思，其單字組成是 ‘pre’ (之前；before)，‘cede’ (走；移動；go)。答案(b) ‘unparalleled’ 無比的；無雙的。’parallel’ 是 ‘平行線’ 的意思。

‘reminiscent’ 是一個不容易去拼的字，但常被使用。簡單來看，它不過就是 ‘remind’ (提醒、回想) 的變種。答案 (b) ‘evocative’ 是’喚起的’，‘引起的’意思。其單字組成是 ‘e’ (ex:外面；out)，‘voc’ (說話；talk)，意思像是用聲音把舊有的記憶叫出來。

‘pivot’ 是汽車或是機器的傳動樞軸；支樞，是關鍵的零件。因此 ‘pivotal’ 是’關鍵的、不可缺少的’。在英文裡是很常被用的單字，但學生多半不會。答案 (a) essential ‘不可缺少的’ 意思，來自於 essence ‘本質，精華’ 的意思。

這篇文章不容易讀: 單字難、文法結構複雜。但值得我們大腦掙扎一下
內容是將現今中國和十九世紀的美國作比較。作者從人權、智慧財產權、都市化和工業化的角度來比較兩者之間的相似。文章似乎在告訴讀者，從整體經濟學的角度來看，一個強國形成之前必須經歷的步驟。
